Invisible big red bus stops your success and profits

written by Yann Vernier

You know those big red London buses?

Even if you’ve never been to the UK, you’ve seen them on TV. Or maybe on postcards you received from friends.

You can’t miss them.

They’re BIIIIIIIG!

Well, a lot of people in London don’t even see them.

That’s right. They don’t even see those BIG 30ft-long double-decker bright red monsters.

They’re too “busy”.

With one hand occupied by their skinny-soya-latte-columbian-mix-frappucino. The other making sure their cell phone doesn’t fall off their ear. Somehow also precariously balancing their handbag or free morning paper under their arm. Some even managing to use a couple of fingers to hold a cigarette.

All walking at their own pace.

In their own little world.

Most walking straight ahead, yet looking anywhere but in front of them.

Only noticing the BIG red bus that’s about to crush them once they’re halfway through crossing the road.

Good thing their instinct of survival kicks in at the last second!

Those with their trendy white headphones in their cell-phone-free-ear remain completely oblivious to the fact they’ve even just crossed a main junction.

Without going to such extremes, are you guilty of doing too many things at once every morning?

Or on a regular basis?

What is that doing for your ability to focus?

Your success and profits are directly related to your ability to focus and get things done.

And completed.

Of course, you can blame “the economy” for everything nowadays. Including your financial results and the strains on your time.

But if you choose to be busy with “a hundred and one things” at once every day…

You’re simply practising an unproductive habit.

Training yourself for the opposite of focus.

And THAT has probably got a lot more to do with your results than “the economy”, “greedy bankers”, “the evil rich”, your spouse, kids, neighbors, or whoever else you can think of blaming.

Hey, no worry. Many people struggle with focus. I’m one of them. That’s why we’ll look into how to develop the habit of productive focus in the next few posts.

Have a wonderful, focused day!

Yann

    What buses? Never seen them?!

Oh you mean those red things that they showed on the episode of Friends in which they went to London?

Yeah. Nearly been knocked over by a few of them!

“productive focus”…I like that. A furniture mover nearly mowed me down today because we was moving a couch and talking on his cell phone at the same time. I was yelling at him to watch out but of course he didn’t hear me because he was ….ON HIS CELL!”Important point, Yann.

A great post Yann. Something that I personally cannot deal with is constant noise. I have no idea why anyone would want to be ‘plugged in’ constantly except that, perhaps, they do not under any circumstance want to know what is going on in their own mind – hence the constant external chatter. When you’re oblivious to where you are and it’s because you’re totally unfocused not because you’re ‘laser focused’ (a totally different type of oblivion), you have a problem.
As always, Yann, I enjoyed your post!

Sounds like those people are already pretty well focused – just not on the buses.

  8. Ok, so my husband had to tell me DAYS after he did it, that he had the car washed inside and out. Now this is a black minivan that often looks gray…and I didn’t notice the difference although it was soooo obvious once he told me. He knew I wouldn’t notice and he was right.

It is about focus and I could use more of it as it is easy to get distracted.

You are right. Focus is critical and trying to do too many things at once can be frutrating and even counter productive. unles you are trying to have a life, a job and take a KH internet marketing course. in that case it’s ok to be doing too much!

  12. Hi Yann,

What a fantastic post! Your spot on with what you say…so many people are busy with all the little things the totally miss the big things that are right in front of them…like that BIG bus!!

I remember hearing a saying that hits the nail on the head “Major on the Majors and minor in the minors”

Focus on the things that will make a difference and don’t worry about the other stuff…get someone else to do them things!

Been looking at job ads lately. “Wanted a multitasker” is a common qualifier. Not for me. I might be interested in a job that asked for someone skilled in “Productive focus.”

  15. Thank goodness your example was juggling more than a few things so I could (almost) be disperaging of them… when really, I am all too sure I AM guilty of that at times.

What a marvelous example to remember to choose and too focus our energy and efforts. Then we refrain from diffusing our energies and actually accomplish things.
